I wanted to paint Christ in a moment that could have been a few days before his atonement and crucifixion. I wanted to show him looking pensive, and maybe a little anxious and concerned, but also peaceful. I like to think he took a few moments in those days to ponder by himself the gravity of what he was about to do, mentally preparing to complete that task.
